NERJA WALKS, EASY TO MEDIUM, Nerja to Frigiliana

NERJA WALKS, EASY TO MEDIUM,

To Frigiliana from Nerja.

Nerja to Frigiliana

Is today a cloudy day? Are the kids over about 10 years old and want an adventure? Or are you just bored? Why not take a fairly easy walk up to Frigiliana.

To walk to Frigiliana is not as bad as it looks, it will take about 2 hours, or quicker if you take the reverse route, ie bus to Friggy, and walk down the river.

Be aware there are no buses on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

Don’t walk up the main road from Nerja, passing Lidl supermarket, as the pavement ends by the motorway, with the obvious messy consequences, especially at night.

If you intend to walk, it will take about 2 hours, and is made by walking up the River (Rio) bank, starting at the Rio Chillar.

Start from the centre of Nerja, find the car park known as the dustbowl.

(The dustbowl can easily be found by going to the main bus stops with the wooded shed, and as you walk down the hill the car park is under the bridge to your left. )

Take the right hand side of the river.

After about 40 minutes you will pass under the main A7 Motorway bridge.

Immediately after going under the motorway bridge, the river splits, well within about 100 metres. There is what is obviously is the base of a river to the left (River Higueron) also to your right/straight on what appears also to be a river bed (River Chillar) with the right hand, generally depending on the time of year, above ground and the left hand mainly underground . You need to follow the river/path to the left, it is obvious where the path is. If you take the right hand river/path you are going in the wrong direction.

After about 20 minutes you come to a open flat area with a house in front of you. To the left of the house is a cutting through a ravine, keep walking through here.

(If at this point you want to call a halt then take the left hand path going up a steep incline. This will take you out onto the road. If you turn right you can follow the pavement into Frigiliana.)

Going through the ravine is an obvious route, as is the river bed. The River Higueron carries on past Frigiliana and I will deal with routes along here later.
This is a great walk, at one stage you climb a set of concrete stairs in the middle of nowhere, such is the drop of the river.

It is always worth taking the makeshift paths at the side of the river bed, especially towards the end where it can get a bit bristly from the fallen bushes.

Above you to the left you will see the start of the village. When you see what is clearly a sports stadium, above left, you are nearly there.

Eventually you reach a path cutting across you, and above you is a green water pipe.

Turn left here and walk up the steep slope to the village of Frigiliana. This is just as easy to do in reverse, just start off through the alley shown below. Consider having a few hours in Frigiliana.
