Nerja walk, Nerja caves to Cortigo Rufino, Nerja.
This is a fairly straightforward walk. It is a circular walk so enjoyment all the way on this one.
I would gauge this as easy to medium. Basically walking up the hill and down the other side with a great lunch stop overlooking the coastline. Approx. 9 Kms and 4 hours.
First thing is to get to the car park at Nerja caves. I suggest parking in the gravel car park immediately before the entrance to the caves complex.
From here, walk down the hill past the Andaluz hotel, to your right and under the motorway. You come to a roundabout with a 'keep fit area in front of you. Walk through the area and turn left into Maro 'High Street.'
Walk the entire length, all 300 metres, and out the other side. You will see another roundabout, and a tunnel going back under the motorway.
Walk through the tunnel, away from the sea. You are now on a road/path. Simply follow this route for approximately 3 KMs. This is a disused river bed and a small amount of clambering is required. You will see what is obviously marking for you to turn right, and again follow the pathway up.
After about 1Km you will see a disused building high up to your left. This is the lunch stop, and Cortigo Ruffino. It looks a long way off but is not too far.
As you walk up the path/river bed, you will see a path coming from the right. Keep walking. The path turns to the left, and keep walking to the Cortigo.
It is very straight forward, and even if you are a girl you cant get lost, honest!
Have lunch here. Immediately below you is the village of Maro, to the right is Nerja, and in the distance on a good day are the mountains surround Malaga airport.
On leaving the Cortigo is is necessary to slightly retrace your steps by about 20 metres. Leave the Cortigo and find the path you came up on. You will see a path going off to the left, away from the sea, into a forest. It is clearly marked, and a very short distance from the Cortigo.
Turn left along this path and follow the track mostly downwards.
After about 20 minutes you will come to a grey disused concrete building. Here you will see the path coming from the Mount Cielo, which will take you to the caves. Turn left onto the path and head down.
Be careful walking this path as there is a lot of loose gravel and it may be slightly slippery. As you follow the path around the hill you will see to your right a number of small paths going down. These are shortcuts, but easier to climb up then down. I always keep to the path. It does not take a lot longer.
After about 2 Kms you will come to a junction. There may be cars parked here, keep going straight and down. Be aware that this path is used a lot for the local picnic site by cars.
Eventually you will arrive in the car park from which you left.
This and all my walks are simple, solitary walks, but if you want something a bit more social interaction, informative about local areas, history and and in depth to varying degrees you cant do better than go walking with John Keo walking tours. John, and his brother Graham, operate out of Nerja and Frigiliana. The link is http://www.hikingwalkingspain.com/ . Well worth the day out with these 2. Give them a try. I did, it was one of the best things I did (I don't work for John, he is just very good).
